On hearing the recent news of Mary Stewart's death, I was gripped by a nostalgic urge to re-read her books, but sadly, after several moves and donations of books at various times, she was no longer on my shelves. Thanks to the Book Depository that loss is being rectified. I think Airs Above the Ground was the first of her books that I read and I might start with that one again. I remember it inspired a favourite painting that I did when I was studying art in high school. Do you have a vivid Mary Stewart memory?

That is sad news. I remember discovering her books in maybe Grade 6?? Oh, her birth surname was Rainbow, how lovely. I was a tad obsessed with Arthurian stories and devoured her Merlin series. Happy reading!!
My first Mary Stewart was Madam Will You Talk. I was eleven or twelve and my older sister, who was a librarian, brought home a copy they were throwing out. I devoured it and went looking for more.
And one day I will travel in the path of that story, visiting the places her heroine visited, and in the same order. And eating the food she ate.
Rainbow, 2paw? Mary Rainbow sounds a bit too bright and happy for the brooding Gothic style mysteries she wrote, doesn't it?
Love the idea of following a heroine's footsteps, Anne.
I don't think I came across the Merlin books, 2paw. Gosh, if only I had more time to read.
