which way is up?

I come from a land downunder...

Or do I?

You know… Australians and Kiwis don’t actually go around thinking about themselves as living at the bottom of the world. The whole idea originated with the first mapmakers, who lived in the northern hemisphere and automatically thought of themselves as “right way up” and therefore “on top.”

Some Aussie mapmakers have decided to produce “corrected” maps…

I mean, who said north is UP? We don't walk around on our heads, do we? :)

This explains why our friend didn't know which part of a country was in the "south."

After living down under for a year and a half.. I'm sorry.. North was still up for us. Must be something about being born on the other side of the equator that ingrains it in us that North is "up." :)

Love it, Barb. Says a lot about perspective, doesn't it?

I love it. I had a map like that in my school room when I was teaching geography (btw I live in the "north") and loved the reactions and responses I got when we discussed which was the right map.

Hope you're enjoying your life down under, Ann.

I can imagine how much your pupils enjoyed your map, Ellen. I used to be a teacher, too!

I guess this map appeals more to those of us who live in the southern hemisphere. Fun, isn't it/

Yes, but, Barbara, I'm straining my neck trying to work out where I am! :)

You new website is absolutely beautiful, btw.
